About this Education Seminar
Contested Auctions by Ian Lisle (suitable for experienced players)
Bidding is hard enough without the opponents interrupting your communication. Depending on what your hand type is, the interference may or may not be a problem. Sometimes their bid can assist in the description of your own hand as you talk to your partner. The same constrictions apply when your partner overcalls or makes a takeout double and your RHO bids before you have had chance to advance your partner's bid.
The assumption is made that you understand the correct evaluation of the strength of a hand using either the TPC, (Total Point Count Method) or LTC, (Losing Trick Count).
We will first look at your side opens the bidding and they interfere in the auction, and then we will consider their side opens the bidding and you compete.
Apart from the obvious pass, normal responses without an intervening bid can be grouped into three categories.
- New suit,
- NT bids,
- fit raises.
If they interfere, these still apply, but you now have double and cue bids to aid in the auction.
